Are there any Latin readers/writers on my flist? I'm considering a tattoo and would like a second opinion on it.

I do read Latin, but not spectacularly well; you could try [livejournal.com profile] latin without stating what you want it for.

Ooh, thanks.

I'm thinking about getting "Omnia mirari etiam tritissima" which is from Linnaus' Philosophia Botanica, which means 'Find wonder in all things, even the most commonplace', or thereabouts. I'm mostly wondering is there a standard for using capital letters or not, or if there's something obviously wrong with the grammar.

It's probably silly to get a tattoo in a language you don't understand, but I'm a taxonomy nerd and it seemed appropriate.

The grammar looks pretty sound, though again I'm hardly the most expert Latinist. I'd translate the first part as "Marvel at all [things]", though that's a pretty semantic difference. As for capitalisation, I don't think that becomes standardised or even terribly expected until perhaps early modern Latin? Medieval Latin writers certainly didn't care overly much, and earlier they didn't even use spacing between words. I think whatever capitalisation you do or do not choose to use should be fine :D

Hooray! Thanks, Siria.

And I promise I'll scrub up on my Latin if I do decide to get it.

If it's Linnaeus, then it's very late Latin indeed (18th century, when Latin was still the international language of science amongst other things), and probably what you need to look at is contemporary Swedish capitalisation. And the grammar looks fine to me, but again could be slightly dodgy but still accurate for the quotation.
